5 Reasons to Avoid GMO Foods

GMO stands for genetically modified organism.  GMO foods include plants or animals whose genetic makeup has been unnaturally modified using ecombinant deoxyribonucleic acid (rDNA) technology. Thus, GMO foods are often also referred to as bioengineered foods. Scientists may genetically alter foods to improve resistance against plant disease, increase nutrient levels or growth levels.  There are several risks associated with this process.  Check out these 5 reasons to avoid GMO foods. 

They are unhealthy

Several studies show that GMOs can leave material behind insides of us, causing long-term issues. GMOs were introduced in 1996. Since then, the percentage of Americans with three or more chronic illnesses increased from 7% to 13% in only 9 years. Conditions such as food allergies, autism, reproductive disorders and digestive disorders have been on the rise. Lab research done on animals fed GMOs have shown negative effects to their kidneys, liver, adrenal glands, spleen, and heart.

They harm the environment

GMOs harm birds, insects, amphibians and marine life.  Water is polluted and biodiversity is being reduced. 

They are impossible to fully get rid of

GMOs can cross pollinate and travel, making it hard if not impossible to fully clean up a contaminated gene pool. This cross-pollination impacts not only the 2017 population but also future generations. Another negative to cross pollination is that when GMO crops and non-GMO crops cross pollinate, it can destroy natural plant varieties.

They increase herbicide and pesticide use

Genetically modified crops require large amounts of pesticides and herbicides. These chemicals find their way into our soil, water, and organisms.  Weeds have become resistant to the chemical glyphosate used on these crops and are evolving into what are now being called “superweeds.” Contrary to what some manufacturers tout, this epidemic has actually resulted in the need for even more pesticide and herbicide use.

They have dangerous side effects

By mixing genes, sometimes from completely unrelated species, we open up a whole new possibility for unpredictable side effects. The process can produce new toxins, allergens, carcinogens and nutritional deficiencies.

It is estimated that over 80% of processed foods contain GMOs. This is often not on the food label.  To avoid these foods, try shopping organic from a local producer.
