Suffering from Migraines? Try Botox Treatment!
To busy New Yorkers, high-stress environments and non-stop activity are just a part of the routine. This fast pace city is full of long work hours and stressful jobs, and what is the result? A lot of people who suffer from migraine headaches.
What are Migraines?
To those who are unfamiliar with the condition, you may be surprised to learn that there is more than one type of migraine headache. The “classic migraine” has an aura that produces a pounding pain on one side of the head. The aura comes in the form of zig-zag lights and other visual disturbances. Along with the headache, the sufferer may have nausea and vomiting. But some patients don’t have auras and, remarkably, some don’t even have much pain. Still, painful migraines are a reason a lot of people take time off from work or play.
The traditional treatment for migraine headache is pain medication. Some of these medications, such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen, can be bought over the counter or prescribed by a doctor. These medications work for mild or moderate migraines and are only temporary relief solutions.
Other types of medications are targeted specifically at migraines. These include triptans and ergots. Triptans cause the blood vessels in the head to narrow. They also neutralize pain pathways in the head. (It should be known that the brain itself doesn’t feel pain). Ergots aren’t as effective at killing the pain as triptans, but they are helpful for people whose migraines last over two days. They are often used in combination with caffeine.
Other medications used by migraine sufferers are those that ease nausea and vomiting. Opioids and glucocorticoids are taken by migraine sufferers.
However, our health and wellness professionals at Complete Wellness NYC offer both MiRx Therapy and Botox Treatment for migraines.
In MiRx Therapy, there are two components in the “treatment” – a medical and physical component. Once we verify that the patient is a good candidate, the medical team will perform tests to determine what triggers the patient’s headaches – whether they be stress, certain foods or even too-bright lights to determine the best course of action.
After that, the physician administers medication delivered via nasal spray to the sphenopalatine ganglion, which is found in the nose. This is performed over several visits and is usually enough to banish the migraine pain. After the medication component, the patient then receives the physical part of the therapy. This might be in the form of chiropractic procedures, aligning the patient’s posture, modifying their diet or helping them find ways to reduce stress.
On the other hand, we also offer Botox Treatment for migraines. Botox was long used for painful medical conditions before it was used for cosmetic enhancements. Botox treatment eased such conditions as wryneck, excessive sweating and strabismus, or crossed eyes. It is now used to ease the pain of migraine headaches as well. This is because of the way the botulinin toxin works. This purified toxin interrupts a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. When this happens, the muscle the nerve controls is paralyzed and relaxes. This causes a reduction or even a banishment in the pain of migraine headache in many people.
Botox is injected with fine needles and is often injected prophylactically or before the pain begins. Patients usually start with two sessions three months apart to see how well the Botox works to treat their headaches.
