Acupuncture Q & A

What Is Acupuncture Treatment?

Acupuncture is a type of treatment that originated in China more than 3,000 years ago. Acupuncturists use extremely slim needles, placing them in key areas on the body to alleviate pain in a natural way. The needles create a balance in the body’s energy, which allows the body to return to its optimal pain-free state.

There are several types of acupuncture. In moxibustion, moxa taken from dried mugwort warms key areas and helps with smooth qi energy flow. In auricular acupuncture, points on the outer ear are stimulated for healing. In cupping therapy, suction is used to help stimulate blood flow and promote healing.

You are not supposed to have more than 25 grams (around 6 teaspoons) of added sugar a day. Everyone is different, but 25 grams is the recommended amount that you should stay under. To put it into perspective, there are 18 grams of sugar in a banana and 37 in a can of coke. That means one can of coke will exceed your recommended amount all at one time.

You should not, and it is almost impossible, to completely cut sugar out of your diet, but when you are having too much, or all at once, it can start to cause problems. When you have all of your daily sugar all at once it starts to cause a blood sugar spike, followed by a drop. This can start to affect your mood, your energy, brain function and hormones!

So what is the best way to avoid this? Combine your sugar with a protein or fat source. If you want a banana for breakfast, do it! Just have it on the side of your eggs, or with some nut butter. Eating it with your meal will slow down the blood sugar response! Try to focus on how you are consuming your sugar, it can really make a difference.
